ABSTRACT: The vegetation of arid and semi-arid regions of Australia is characterised by spinifexdominated
ecosystems. Spinifex grasses belong to the genus Triodia, of which there are at least 67
species, and are broadly classified into hard and soft, resiniferous types. This paper draws on a multidisciplinary
research project that examines the potential uses of two species of Spinifex as a material
component of a range of sustainable building products. Novel findings on the botany, ecology,
chemistry and bioengineering of Triodia spp. Continue to inform the architectural stream of this
research, which is in the third year of a five-year project.
