This paper discusses an application of embodied energy analysis in the design of small-scale framed
buildings. Discrete design project assignments in a second year Building Technology unit and
Lawson’s, ‘Building Materials Energy and the Environment’ (1996), are used to introduce the concept
of embodied energy in construction and demonstrate the application of embodied energy analysis to
architecture students. Embodied energy ratings for each of the floor, wall and roof framing and
cladding systems in the students’ respective building designs were calculated (Lawson, 1996).
Results were tabulated to compare the embodied energy performance for differing cladding and
framing material selections and designs. The project work and analysis illustrates the effects that
material and system selection can have on the embodied energy of a small-scale framed building. It
provides a clear demonstration that the determination of embodied energy for small-scale building
design is a relatively straightforward exercise that can provide information for comparative analysis of
a range of available framing systems and cladding material options.
